Projects & Hobbies:
Variety is the Spice of life, as they say. Or is it Spice is Life? Either way, how much is too much when it comes to personal interests? Can a person spread himself too thin? You decide!
I have been a licensed Amateur Radio operator since age 16 and still enjoy "rag chewing" (chatting) with other operators from all over the world. I hope to buy some new equipment after graduating from law school and to get back on the air, but it's an expensive hobby. While you don't have to be gainfully employed in order to participate, it really helps.
The epitaph of a famous astronomer once said in part,"I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." The stars have inspired me since youth, which is clearly evidenced by my passion for astronomy. I have built several small telescopes for personal use, and most recently before law school, worked as a technician on the Large Binocular Telescope near Safford, Arizona. You wouldn't believe all the things in the night sky you can see through a telescope. The heavens truly do declare the glory of God!
Mosaic artwork from the Middle Ages also fascinates me, particularly that of Byzantine origin. Mosaics are pictures made entirely of small pieces of glass or colored tile called "smalti". I'm currently learning how to make such mosiacs as the one shown below located in a basilica in Ravenna, Italy.
Gem faceting is another hobby of mine. I only started last year, but will soon have enough skill to cut stones like the "Easy 8" Citrine below.
